Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury is an insult to the brain caused by an external physical force, which can result in temporary or permanent impairment of cognitive abilities, physical functioning and/or disturbance of emotional functioning. Patients suffering from traumatic brain injuries can manifest multiple combinations of symptoms, which vary in severity. Physical therapy works to identify the major contributors to the disability by assessing factors such as balance, posture, quality of movement, coordination, and pain, followed by devising a patient specific program to best meet each individual patient’s needs. Physical therapy then works to retrain patients to improve functional activity level through goal oriented programs focusing on multiple components including; establishing strength, flexibility, timing, and sequencing of movements.
